The Light in Apartment 3B
The Light in Apartment 3B Every night at exactly 11:12,
the light in Apartment 3B turned on.
Maya noticed it by accident at first.
She had just moved into 4B, directly above, carrying
too many boxes and too many thoughts.
New city. New job. New life. She didn’t expect to notice
something as small as a light. But she did.
And then she kept noticing. Every night—11:12. Not 11:10.
Not 11:15. Always the same. At first, it was just a
curiosity. Then it became a habit. She’d pause whatever
she was doing—reading, brushing her teeth, staring out the
window—and glance at the clock. 11:12. Click.
The light below. It felt… intentional.
Like a ritual. One night, after a particularly exhausting
day, Maya found herself lingering by the stairwell instead
of taking the elevator. She wasn’t sure why—until she
stopped in front of Apartment 3B. The light was already
on. Before she could second-guess herself, she knocked.
A few seconds passed. Then the door opened.
The man standing there looked surprised—but not annoyed.
He had tired eyes, the kind that had seen too many long
days, and a quiet kind of presence that filled the space
without trying.
"Hi,"
Maya said, suddenly aware of how strange this was.
"I’m your upstairs neighbor. 4B."
He nodded slowly.
"Ethan."
"I know this is weird,"
she admitted.
"But… your light."
"My light?"
he echoed, one eyebrow lifting.
"It turns on every night at 11:12,"
she said.
"Exactly. I just—"
She laughed awkwardly.
"I guess I wanted to know why."
For a moment, he just looked at her.
Then, unexpectedly, he smiled. Not a big smile.
Just enough to soften his face.
"Do you want to come in?"
She hesitated. Then nodded. His apartment was simple.
Clean, but lived-in. A single lamp glowed in the corner—the
one she assumed was the 11:12 light.
Ethan leaned against the wall, arms crossed loosely.
"It used to be hers."
Maya didn’t need to ask who.
"She liked routines,"
he continued.
