The Rent on the Person You Want to Become

The Rent on the Person You Want to Become

I wake inside my dream life. Then the landlord tells me the rent is one promise kept today.

You wake inside the exact life you keep saying you want.

Someone knocks and slides a bill under the door: TODAY’S RENT IS ONE PROMISE KEPT.

Then the apartment starts disappearing around you.

Vale unfolds the second bill.

It is longer than your arm.

WAKE UP EARLIER.

START MONDAY.

FINISH WHAT YOU BEGIN.

STOP QUITTING WHEN NOBODY IS WATCHING.

You recognize every promise.

You also recognize how many times you made each one.

Vale taps the page.

“You think the problem is that you keep failing.”

“It is not.”

A framed certificate vanishes from the wall. Then the mirror changes.

The stronger version of you is gone.

Your reflection looks exactly like it did yesterday.

Vale says, “Every time you break a promise to yourself, you teach yourself not to believe you.”

That hurts more than losing the apartment.

Because suddenly you understand where your confidence went.

You did not lose it all at once. You spent it one broken promise at a time.

Across the hall, Ilyan opens their door.

Their apartment is imperfect.

Half finished work. Laundry on a chair. Shoes by the door.

“I thought people like you had it together.”

Ilyan laughs.

“No. I just stopped requiring myself to feel ready before I kept my word.”

Vale places one final key in your hand.

The tag reads: THE PERSON YOU KEEP WAITING TO BECOME.

The key turns.

The last room is almost empty.

No perfect body. No finished work. No trophies.

Just a table covered in receipts.

WENT ANYWAY.

FINISHED THE HOUR.

RESTED WITHOUT QUITTING.

KEPT MY WORD.

Every receipt is a day you showed up when nobody would have known if you did not.

Vale says, “This is where your confidence came from.”

You stare at them.

“Confidence?”

“You kept waiting to feel like this person before acting like them.”

“But identity is built in the opposite direction.”

One by one, pieces of the apartment begin returning.

Not because you earned a perfect future.

Because you proved you can trust yourself with one day.

Vale places the lease in front of you.

“I was never the landlord. I only collected what you kept owing.”

Under LANDLORD is your name. Under RENT DUE:

BECOME SOMEONE YOUR OWN PROMISES CAN BELIEVE IN.
