Tobias Thorne finds the cold spool of black thread. The town erased everyone who touched it.

On October 20, 2004, Tobias Thorne finds the cold spool of black thread inside the maritime signal museum.

The cold spool of black thread carries Tobias Thorne's fingerprint beneath its surface.

At 1:17 a.m., Tobias Thorne records rain falling only indoors.

The recording predates Tobias Thorne's birth by forty years.

Then a dead technician asks Tobias Thorne to look underneath.

Beneath the cold spool of black thread, Tobias Thorne discovers a numbered human tooth.

The number matches a locked cabinet in the signal museum under Quiet Meridian.

Inside, Tobias Thorne finds payroll cards for people nobody remembers.

Each forgotten worker signed the same crooked surname as Tobias Thorne.

A fresh card lists Tobias Thorne's shift as beginning tonight.

The lights inside the signal museum under Quiet Meridian turn violet one row at a time.

Every violet lamp reveals handprints moving beneath the floor while Tobias Thorne watches.

Tobias Thorne follows those handprints toward a door painted as concrete.

The door opens onto a copy of the signal museum under Quiet Meridian filled with warm dust.

A clock in the copied room runs through October 20, 2004 again and again.

At each repetition, the cold spool of black thread appears closer to Tobias Thorne's chest.

A ledger identifies the copied room as the witness nursery while Tobias Thorne watches.

The final ledger entry states that the apiary fed on unsolved grief while Tobias Thorne watches.

Behind Tobias Thorne, a nursery cot begins rocking without a child.

The blanket rises. A smaller Tobias Thorne opens its eyes and points at the cold spool of black thread.
