Darius Kestrel finds the smoking ivory domino. The town erased everyone who touched it.

On March 11, 1974, Darius Kestrel finds the smoking ivory domino inside the municipal seed vault.

The smoking ivory domino carries Darius Kestrel's fingerprint beneath its surface.

At 1:17 a.m., Darius Kestrel records fourteen mouths speaking in one throat.

The recording predates Darius Kestrel's birth by forty years.

Then a dead technician asks Darius Kestrel to look underneath.

Beneath the smoking ivory domino, Darius Kestrel discovers a numbered human tooth.

The number matches a locked cabinet in the seed vault under Morrow Fen.

Inside, Darius Kestrel finds payroll cards for people nobody remembers.

Each forgotten worker signed the same crooked surname as Darius Kestrel.

A fresh card lists Darius Kestrel's shift as beginning tonight.

The lights inside the seed vault under Morrow Fen turn violet one row at a time.

Every violet lamp reveals handprints moving beneath the floor while Darius Kestrel watches.

Darius Kestrel follows those handprints toward a door painted as concrete.

The door opens onto a copy of the seed vault under Morrow Fen filled with warm dust.

A clock in the copied room runs through March 11, 1974 again and again.

At each repetition, the smoking ivory domino appears closer to Darius Kestrel's chest.

A ledger identifies the copied room as the witness nursery while Darius Kestrel watches.

The final ledger entry states that the river returns evidence on the killer's birthday while Darius Kestrel watches.

Behind Darius Kestrel, a nursery cot begins rocking without a child.

The blanket rises. A smaller Darius Kestrel opens its eyes and points at the smoking ivory domino.
